Random occurrences of unknown significance

This evening in downtown Philadelphia, I saw a street person walking along carring a stick over his shoulder with a small red bundle attached. Really - just like in the cartoons. I was driving with cars behind, so I couldn't get a photo, or even a close look at his face. I wonder if he's copying the old cartoon images of hobos or is just of the same spirit as the real ones who inspired such images?
